During the blessed month of Ramadan, Faith Associates facilitated the production of a Ramadan Reminders video campaign. The campaign bought together 7 leading Imams, Scholars and Aalimahs from across the UK to provide bite sized, youth orientated reminders about the benefits of Ramadan and the need to be practical, progressive people in society.
The usage of social media increases significantly during the month of Ramadan. According to social media giants Twitter, in 2014 the word ‘Ramadan’ was mentioned over 250 million times just in the UK. These are incredible numbers and show that even though Ramadan allows individuals the chance to focus and reflect on themselves, there is still a lot of activity taking place online. As a result of this, the month long campaign aimed to enhance the Ramadan experience for young Muslims by allowing them to engage with social media in a spiritual way.
The contributors to the Ramadan Reminders series included Imam Adam Kelwick (Liverpool), Shaykha Safia Shahid (Hounslow), Imam Qari Asim (Leeds), Ustadha Khola Hasan (Epping), Imam Hassan (Gloucester), Dr Musharraf Hussain (Nottingham) and Shaykh Sayed Razawi (London). These contributors came from key locations from across the UK and also ranged across the theological spectrum to show the unity amongst scholars of different schools of thought.
The Ramadan Reminders campaign concluded with a very special Eid video, courtesy of Imam Adam Kelwick and the Abdullah Quilliam Society, which turned the cameras onto young Muslims and engaged with them on their reflections of the month, the challenges they faced and the learning they would take forward for the rest of the year.
To date, the social media campaign has reached almost 1 million people and the videos have been viewed over 180,000 times (an average of over 6000 views a day). These results clearly show that the campaign was successful and Faith Associates intends to continue in this vein and replicate this for the coming years.
